How to Get Rid of URL details from Printed Browser Pages

You’ve searched the internet high and low and found a really great article, or a nice picture you need to print – but how to get rid of those unsightly page details from the printed pages?

From the dawn of the internet,  browsers add the date, page number and URL of the page printed from the web to the printed version by default. Most of the time you probably would not want that on your copies and – lucky you – it can be done!

In this post, we will give you tips on how to do it in most commonly used browsers – IE and Firefox. If you use a different browser, this information would still be useful to you, since most of the browsers use similar logic.

Printing Tips for IE (Internet Explorer).

Either click on small image of a printer, or from the top menu, choose File/Page Setup.

Below is a screenshot showing the window that would open up if you are using IE8, with default values.

Reset the Headers and Footers dropdowns for all the options to value of Empty, as in this second screenshot:

If you are using ie7 and older, the process is a bit different and more manual but essentially has the same logic. In the Page Setup window, remove the text in the “Headers and Footers text boxes. Instead of dropdowns, you would see the editable text fields. The default value for header is &w&bPage &p of &P and for footer &u&b&d. Simply remove those values to make fields blank (if you prefer, you can save those values above in the text editor, so you can copy it back into those fields later on, if you need to restore these values).

Click the OK button to save your changes.

Printing Tips for Firefox

Either click on small image of a printer on your taskbar, or from the top menu, choose File/Page Setup.

Then go to the second tab called Margins & Header/Footer.

The window should look like the screenshot below, if you still have your default values set:

Change the dropdowns values to Blank for all the items you don’t want printed. You should end up with the window that looks like this next screenshot, below:

Click the OK button to save your changes. Done!
